Rafael Nadal’s countryman, Tommy Robredo, has won the Vegeta Croatia Open by defeating Fabio Fognini of Italy in the final match. Robredo won the match in the straight sets by 6-0, 6-3.
It was an easy win for the Spaniard who was given the 5th seed in this tournament. He got prize money of 74,000 Pounds for winning this title.
This was the 5th match between these two players and Robredo won it for the 4th time.
Talking to the reporters in the post match interview, Robredo said, “It’s nice to win a final. I haven’t won too many finals in my career. So, it’s a special feeling. I was certainly nervous, but, after hitting some good shots in the first couple of games, I calmed down.”
Fognini was in tremendous nick coming into this match. He had recently won a couple of titles i.e. Mercedes Cup and German Open. He was on a winning streak of 13 games.
So, this match was expected to be a close one. But, the Italian superstar couldn’t find his rhythm today.
In the first set, Robredo was in a destructive mood. He blew away his opponent some powerful shots and registered a bagel in no time. His forehand shots in that opening set were really glorious.
In the second set, both the players dropped their serve twice in the first 4 games and the scores were equalized at 2-2.
The next 3 games went with the serve and at the end of the 7th game; Robredo was leading by 4-3.
With another serve break in the 8th game, the Spaniard enhanced his lead to 5-3 and then, sealed the match with a serve hold in the next game.
The match got over in just more than an hour.
