Rafael Nadal has stormed into the third round of the ongoing French Open. In his second round match yesterday, he got better of his young opponent Dominic Thiem easily. He defeated the 20 years Austrian in the straight sets by 6-2, 6-2, 6-3.

Quite a few people were excited about this contest. It’s not that they were expecting Thiem to pull off an upset against Nadal who is known as the king of clay courts. They just wanted to see what kind of temperament the highly rated young boy shows.

Thiem didn’t disappoint them. Yes, he lost the match by a big margin, but, he played some extraordinary shots during the match to make people believe that the win he secured against Stanislas Wawrinka a few days ago was not a fluke.

However, for him, Nadal just proved to be too strong a player to compete with and he ended up coming second.

Talking to the reporters in the post match interview, Nadal said, “Due to the weather condition, I got the chance to have a couple of days’ break before this match and that helped me.”

“It was a vital match and I am happy to have won it in straight sets. Yes, there were moments when I made mistakes. I should probably have tried to play little more aggressively, but, that’s fair enough. You can’t have a perfect match every day.”

Thiem perhaps would have been able to take the match a bit closer if he had capitalized on the opportunities that he got. But, he seemed to be nervous and faltered on key occasions. That’s understandable though as he was up against a legendary player. But, he showed the glimpses of his extraordinary talent. All he needs to do now is to keep improving his game.
